The Easter baskets back at the house while we hunt for eggs.
Maisey checking out an Easter egg. She held onto this egg for about 5 seconds!
The line up.
Easter at my house is still the exact same as it was when I was growing up. We wake up in the morning and have "Day before breakfast". This is an amazing egg, bread, sausage and cheese dish that you make the night before and then cook it the next morning. My brothers still fight over the middle piece. When I was little we used to have the Easter egg hunt first, then eat. Now that we are all older we like to eat first, then hunt - I guess we need sustenance for the hunt these days. Anyways, after breakfast we wait while my parents hide eggs in the backyard. These eggs used to be stuffed by my mom in the wee hours of the morning but slowly over time that task went to me and my sisters. My little sister Erin has had to grow up fast - no more Easter bunny, Santa, or the tooth fairy! This Easter my sister Erin, Danny's girlfriend, Caitlin and I stuffed all the eggs. We had so much candy we didn't have eggs to put it all in. You see, my parents always fill some of the eggs with money. Mostly coins but a few lucky eggs have dollar bills in them. Caitlin decided to take the money eggs we had already filled and put candy in them too. This will come into play later during the hunt.
Back to Easter...so my parents hide the eggs in the backyard. They also hide each of our Easter baskets out there too. And yes, we still do all of this despite the fact that only one member of the family is under the age of 20 ( not including the baby)! My parents like to hide the older kids baskets really well so we spend half our time looking for the basket instead of getting eggs. They were particularly ruthless about that this year!
We also have strict rules for the egg hunting. We have to line up at the door going out into the backyard youngest to oldest starting with Erin and ending with me. You get to go out one at a time with the youngest getting a slight head start. But, you can't pick up any eggs until you find your basket. Once you find your basket you bring it back to the house and you can get a bag and start hunting for eggs. Everyone tries really hard to find the most money eggs. My brother Adam, who hates candy, always shakes the eggs and leaves (or throws them at other hunters) any eggs with candy in them. This year he got tricked because Caitlin put candy in all the eggs, even the ones with dollar bills in them. Adam was not happy when he found out. Needless to say, Caitlin won the most money. My Grandma Ellen gave her a run for it though. Grandma was egg hunting for Danny who had to work. Maisey even got some egg hunting action strapped to John!
Who knows how long we'll keep this up. We may be lining up with all our kids in the front and all the parents in the back, who knows!! It's funny how these traditions just keep on going.

looks like a lot of fun! i will have to tell my parents about the money in the egg tradition, it sounds like a good one!
When I was a kid my parents wrapped my easter basket in plastic and sunk it in the jacuzzi. It took me 3 hours to find it - ruthless! I think it's cool that your parents make such a big deal out of Easter for you guys.
That was so fun to read. I loved it!! What a fun tradition! I love the idea to hunt for the basket first! Anyway, glad you had fun! I loved the pictures!!!
OH MY GOSH! I can't believe how much fun that sounds. After all these years you keep up the tradition and still love it! I am going to have to try harder to make our families traditions a little more involved like that.
I am really sad that we didn't get together when you were here. Lets make it a priority next time k...
lila - i am sad too! I was just thinking how i miss vegas and want to go back and visit again soon. we will for sure hang out.
leslie - that is hilarious about your easter basket - good idea though - good thing my parents don't read my blog that often or they might get some bad ideas!
Spencer's family does the money eggs thing too! It's a serious free for all out there! Dangerous place when there is money involved, huh?
Fun post! Sounds like Easter at your house is a blast no matter if you're Erin's age or married! Made me laugh that your brother was tricked because the money eggs had candy in them too. Loved the picture of Maisey staring at the egg.
And thanks so much for your sweet graduation card in the mail. Made my day!
Holy Cow!! I would NEVER have recognized your sister Erin. I could have sworn she was like three...(She was probably two the last time I saw her.
I love traditions!
Oh my gosh! I swear I almost had a heart attack when I saw Erin! She was sooooo tiny last time I saw her! That is what I get for not being able to make it to your wedding! And Adam! Still too cute. Of course Maisey takes the cake! She is getting so big! That happens too fast.
Looks like a fun party. I love those family traditions.
good times. sadly, the adults don't get to hunt in our family anymore. maybe i should refer my parents and my in-laws to your post. :) maisey is so stinkin' cute! i just want to kiss her cheeks!
